Raising a child that’s not yours

Raising a child that is not yours can be quite the challenge. Especially if you are in Karrueche’s predicament and just found out about the child.

We recently learned that Singer Chris Brown has a 9 month year old baby with a model. Unfortunately, if you do the math then you’d realize that him and long time girlfriend, Karrueche were together while the child was being conceived. Yes, it’s true that their relationship was on and off again. But in this case it’s just the simple principle.

So raising a child that’s not yours may not always be the best decision. But if you make that decision, what are some of the matters you need to be ready for? If you are going to build a true connection then this sort of thing takes time. Nothing in this case, should ever be forced. After all, it’s already an uncomfortable situation. Most children can’t grasp having an additional authority figure telling them what to do.

A recent study shows that 42% of adults have a step-relationship–either a stepparent, a step or half sibling, or a stepchild. This translates to 95.5 million adults. Americans marry, divorce, and cohabit more than any Western society. They also start and stop relationships more quickly. And let’s be clear, most children under 18 who have married parents are at a large risk of losing that status.

Tips to remember

1. Know your role and remain consistent.
2. Do not get distracted trying to be too nice and set boundaries.
3. Build a connection slowly and don’t try to force it.
4. Be a role model. If you want respect then make sure your are giving it.
5. Understand that your love for your partner will now be shared with the children.
6. Decide whether you want to love or educate them.
7. Try and build a working relationship with their parent who is separated from your partner.
