In recent news, the entertainment world is mourning the loss of another great. Actor Alan Thick, best known for “Growing Pains” has passed away. Weeks after Thanksgiving and just one week before Christmas, the Thicke family has to bury their father and husband. Thicke’s sons express their sentiments via their social media, “The world lost one of it’s finest, you are a legend and I love you Pops. Until next time” Carter Thicke tweeted. ‘Blurred Lines’ singer Robin Thicke posted via Instagram, “My Father passed away today. He was the best man I ever knew. The best friend I ever had. Let’s all rejoice and celebrate the joy he brought to every room he was in. We love you Alan Thicke. Thank you for your love. Love your grateful son.” Having to deal with the loss of a parent can be very difficult, especially during the holiday season. Although it is a very emotional time, there are ways to get through these tough moments.

Surrounding yourself with loved ones during those trying times are always a way to cope. It is true, no one can ever understand how you truly feel, yet they can be there to console you when you need it the most. Just as Thicke’s sons expressed their feelings on their fathers sudden death on social media, you too can find an outlet that works for you to express yourself. Social media is not for everybody, so you don’t have to go that route. Another way to cope with a parents loss is to gather all your memorable moments you shared together, from the first time they were holding you in the hospital as baby to your very last birthday you celebrated with them. Revisiting the good times that were shared always helps take the sting from the pain away.
Grieving for a parent, like any grief, can be exhausting emotionally, physically and spiritually. Take care of yourself. Grieve at your own pace, no one is obligated to spend a certain amount of time on dealing with death. Some people grieve right away, while it may take others time to come to terms with reality. Never let anyone make you feel bad for being sad, it’s natural. One author explains how she thought she would be ready for when her mother passed away because of her illness, however when the time came she wasn’t at all. Don’t expect to be “ready,” no one is ever ready to lose parent. Most importantly remember that your parent would want you to continue living your life, they may be gone physically but will always be with you spiritually.

There is no time or place that anyone can tell you when it’s that time for your parent to pass. Even when diagnosed with a medical illness. The preparation is to live your life to fullest with your parents and create great memories to hold on to forever. It’s sad to hear the news of Alan Thicke sudden death, but he has left behind a legacy that will live on forever through his family and work. Our deepest condolences goes out to Thicke family.
