Wendy Williams announces graves disease diagnosis…
Talk show host Wendy Williams announced to her audience this week that she has graves disease. The heartening news comes months after Williams suddenly collapsed during the Halloween segment on her show. The popular talk show host is following doctors orders and taking a three week break from her show. Many people speculated something other than dehydration was the cause of her collapse in October, and now we know why. We did some research to find out just how serious this disease is and how to identify symptoms.
Graves disease is a condition that causes the immune system to attack the thyroid. It often goes undiagnosed because its symptoms run a wide spectrum. Named after Robert Graves, (the first physician to describe this type of hyperthyroidism), this disease can also have a devastating impact on the eyes, which Williams alluded to in her reveal. This is a common effect of Graves, because the immune system may also mistake the tissues in the back of the eye as foreign.
According to research, about 2 percent of the population suffer from graves disease. Often times the disease goes undiagnosed because of the wide span of symptoms. We’ve gathered the most common symptoms to look for that may determine signs of graves disease.
- Fatigue
- Sleep deprivation
- Trouble concentrating
- Brain fog
- Muscle Weakness
- Change in sex drive
- Weight and hair loss
- Bulging and/or irritated eyes; feeling like something is in your eye that shouldn’t be
- High blood pressure
- 10.For women: Irregular periods or missed periods altogether; fertility issues; miscarriage
Fortunately with the proper treatment, graves disease can be controlled and possibly cured. A person diagnosed with the disease will have to be placed on medications that ideally will regulate their thyroid. For more intense situations there will need to be a Radioactive Iodine ( RAI) procedure done that will eliminate the thyroid or even a surgical removal of the thyroid. Following the procedure you would then be placed on medications to simulate the functions of a normal thyroid. Fans of Wendy Williams are thankful for her transparency of her recent health diagnosis and wish the best for the talk show host. As always, you should always consult with your physician whenever you’re not feeling good.
