Hip replacement like Lara Spencer
Being defeated has never been a thing for Good Morning America’s co-anchor Lara Spencer. From her competitive swimming days at Penn State into her adulthood as a tennis player, Spencer has never backed down from a challenge. Recently, she was faced with a challenge she never imagined she would have to go through at her age. Spencer who is 47, announced that she would be going under the knife for a hip replacement. According to medical doctor, Dr. Peter Moley, about 10 percent of hip replacements are done on patients 50 years old or younger. The question people may wonder is, how can someone who is so athletic have to undergo this type of surgery so soon?
Spencer sat down with her Good Morning America crew and explained what got her to this point and why did it take so long for her to speak out about it. “It was so upsetting, I waited for so long time before I did anything about it or told anyone because it sounds like an old person’s problem and I just couldn’t believe it” she explains. A lot of athletes could experience the same thing Spencer is going through. She has accepted the fact that her long years of being such a great athlete has caused her hip to wear and tear. Your bones can only endure so much and at some point in your life its going to need some repairing to keep tracking through life. With that being said, Spencer was ready for her surgery so she could start her rehabilitation and move on with a healthier hip. According to research, a hip replacement can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to fully recover.
So how can you avoid a hip replacement? From the sound of things, you can’t! Think of it as your car, you buy it brand new but you have to keep the maintenance up on it. Oil changes, tire rotations, premium gas (for some), and so on. That car should last you well over 100,000 miles…however, if as soon as you get the car you hit the road going on a cross country tour, the car is bound to wear and tear faster than the average car. That’s how the body runs, Spencer’s hip was bound to need replacement, it just happened sooner because of all the years of playing sports wore her hip cartilage out. This is not to scare anyone, but to make you aware. Drinking plenty of milk is still suggested to keep those bones strong, so don’t give up on the vitamin D. If you are experiencing any signs of chronic pain, don’t ignore it. Go seek medical attention, the sooner the diagnosis the better the chances of rehabilitation and back to what you love doing.
