Fit, Fabulous and Forty!

Recently I had the chance to see singer/songwriter and actress Toni Braxton live. When I saw her I was just astonished at how amazing her body looked. She is a business mogul, music extraordinaire, most importantly a mother of two boys. By the looks of her body and how fit she is, you would never guess she had 2 babies, let alone guess her age. Braxton is among many women over the age of forty who make twenty- something-year olds run to the gym and try to keep up. So exactly how are these women staying fit, the natural way? Research has shown plenty of different methods used to get the best results to stay fit for middle aged women.

According to a 2008 study by the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, adults can gain substantial health benefits with just 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic activity per week or just 1.25 hours of vigorous aerobic activity per week. It is recommended that at least 10 minutes of physical activity should be done at a time. Losing muscle mass begins after the age of 30 and speeds up even faster after the age of 40. It is important to include some kind of muscle building exercise into your weekly workout routine to maintain healthy muscle and strength. Some exercises to help are:

  1. Jogging

     2. Running for your legs hips and stomach

   3. Light weight lifting for chest/shoulders/arms/back

Staying fit and healthy is not just about working out; the majority of the benefits as we know, come from your eating habits. It is said that after the age of 40 you should being adding more whole grain, vegetables and fruits to your diet. Eat at least 5-7 servings of vegetables and fruit, and drink 8-10 glasses of water to lessen the amount of white flour and sugar in take per day.

Regardless of age, fitness is always going to be an important factor for health. After hitting middle age, it becomes extremely important to maintain. A healthy fitness and diet regime can prevent all types of health concerns from creeping up including: heart disease, bad cholesterol levels, strokes, hypertension, colon/breast cancer, muscle/joint aches, diabetes, depression and bone loss menopause. Whether or not you’re in the public eye or just trying to stay fit after forty, these are some ways to make it happen.
